Contrary to the old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” having a good cover can make or break an indie book. When an author is competing with millions of other books online, having a book that immediately catches a reader’s eye makes a huge difference.

1. At Water’s Edge by S. McPherson We love the typography in this one and the way it weaves into the overall design. We also love the glowing green mist and the interplay between light and shadow.
2. Origin’s Rising by Eric Andreas This is a pretty simple and standard science fiction cover, but it’s done very well. We love the shape of the planet at the bottom of the image and the way it glows. Once again, the typography adds a lot.
3. Curse of the Sphinx by Raye Wagner White covers done well can be absolutely gorgeous. We love how the words on the cover are positioned and the way the figure takes up the space on the page.
4. The Bloody Shoe Affair by Joy York Intriguing and beautifully designed mystery cover. The style of the shoes along with the lace, buildings, and typography give a good sense of the time period and mood of the book.
5. Blue by Kasey Jackson Can you get more artsy? The abstracted half-face is eerily beautiful, and the composition is very pleasing to the eye.
6. Scattering Stars by Wendy C. Jorgensen An adorable cover for a YA science fiction book. We love the glowing text and the snowy shapes at the bottom, as well as the scattered stars that are featured prominently all over the cover.
7. Ghost on the Lake by Alex Alexander Three words: creepy as heck. This cover has a vaguely anime feel, a bit reminiscent of Spirited Away. The artwork and the text work together well to create a haunting visual.
8. The Goddess Stone by Casey Bunch A pretty and well-designed fantasy novel cover. The combination of the glowing stone, architecture, and tinted blue text sets the tone of a magical world to be discovered within the pages.
9. The Tapestry by Paul Wigmore The shadows on the title and the roundness of the orb give this cover an almost magical 3d effect. The glow, reflection, and shadows also make this cover stand out.
10. Riley Carson and the Cherokee Caves by Megan Wargula This cover gives off a classic middle-grade mystery feel with bright colors and expressive silhouettes of two kids and a dog, which is sure to draw in the book’s target audience.
